Milwaukee’s Bests | 9:32 am | 22 August 2005

The best Best Bloody Marys in Milwaukee come from the Eitel/Johnson/Montemurro establishments – the Nomad’s, though, has always my favorite. The newly remodeled Comet is closing in, however, because THEY INCLUDE A STRIP OF BACON. Is that not the most brilliant thing ever? Comet also serves bacon as a bar snack, after 5pm on Sundays.
We had a fun time in Milwaukee, visiting friends for birthdays and motorcycles. Koppa’s Farwell Foods still has the best sausage, and they remembered me, so they are now the official Best Polish Grocer in the world.

What all is in that Bloody Mary? Is that PICKLE? And what is the ivory colored thing on the spear? It looks like raw potato — or maybe garlic? Please list all garnishes? Heh.

Whoa, wait — Comet’s bloody marys have BACON?? Oh, I am so going to give one of those a try next weekend.
And yes, Reecie. That’s a pickle. Is that not a standard garnish elsewhere? It is in MKE. Little pickle, little celery, some green olives. Sometimes a beef stick. And always a beer chaser if the drink is to be done properly.
But yeah, um, I can’t identify the thing on the spear. What is that, Mimi? A mushroom?

What?! Pickles aren’t standard-issue? I’m never leaving Wisconsin, then! Pickles are standard, olives are standard, and there’s often a lemon wedge and a lime wedge. You rarely see celery, because pickles taste better. There are frequently pickled mushrooms (that’s what the lil’ white blob is). I have also seen the occasional shrimp. Meat sticks and cheese are rare but not unheard of. I like Comet’s bacon/pickle/mushroom/olive combination best (although adding a shrimp wouldn’t ruin it!). The Nomad makes theirs with a splash of Guinness in the mix, which is also brilliant.
Wow, this all sounds so good! I wonder if there’s any tomato juice in the house…

I’ve always added Guinness to Bloody Marys — it really is yummy. But no, pickles aren’t standard issue, and that’s a shame, because I’ll bet that IS yummy.
I may try adding cayenne and using pickled okra and shrimp as garnish. Call it a Bayou Mary. Heh.
